The step you are missing is that you're still trying to connect to your server.

Install the regular sync plugin on your computer into FileMaker Pro (not FileMaker Server) - then add the DDR without getting the server involved using the standard wifi methods.

If you are having trouble seeing the computer, try our connection troubleshooting wizard from here:
http://fmwebschool.com/reference/FMTouch_Connection_Wizard

Hope that helps!

Please forgive me if I sound like a complete idiot. I am not an IT guy, I just build/maintain the database, and have very limited knowlede of hardware, and networking.

I went through the troubleshooting through to the Windows connections step, I'm sure this is where my problem is, but I am confused. Our database is on a server, not just my computer. I'm not sure how to not get the server involved. But, I went to the preferences screen on my local copy of Filemaker (not on the server - that's in a different room I don't have access to), and looked at the plug-ins tab. The only plug-in listed is the AutoUpdate. Since the FMTouch Sync is not (and cannot be) enabled, it won't show up here - right? I went to the Server Admin Console and checked the plug-ins tabe there. It shows a current IP address. I used that to manually connect in FMTouch, and I get the same thing - it timesout. Do I need to turn off the firewall?

My hope, is that our sales force in the field (spread throughout the country) could use this to access the DB, but turning off the firewall for them to dowload the DDR doesn't sound like something our IT guys will appreciate. And its begining to sound like they would have to be here on the local network to do it anyway? Is this the case?

Well the key missing piece here is that adding a DDR cannot be done through the server. Therefore you need to be with an iPhone in a local network looking at a screen with a regular sync plugin (which you would then see in your Plugins area and not the Admin Console). Once that is done and the DDR is on the phone, you can sync with a server.

My recommendation here would be for you to get FMTouch working normally - stop caring about the server, use a regular sync plugin and get a DDR loaded into YOUR copy of FMTouch. You can then sync using your own copy of FileMaker Pro (and yes, it can be syncing with the database open from the server just fine).

Once you have that working, if you want to efficiently distribute the app to people across the country - your best bet is FMTouch Enterprise and Adhoc distribution. That allows you to ship the DDR as part of the app, have a custom icon, etc - and even some prefilled sync settings. At that point you don't worry about the DDR at all with them - it's shipped. However before you even think about this step, you need to get it running with your iPhone and make sure that the key things in the app work as you expect.

Hope that helps!

I did that. It still times out.

I installed the plug-in on my machine. It shows up as enabled on the plug-in tab under preferences, and I understand the database needs to be running on my machine, but I'm running it off the network. Do I need to be running a copy that's saved locally on my computer?

So this obviously isn't going to work for me. How do I get a refund?

I apologize that this wasn't answered in time - the forum is actually not the best way to get timely support for an issue. Could you open a quick ticket at http://fmwebschool.com/support and let us know how far you got in adding the DDR file WITHOUT server sync.

Essentially stop trying to involve server sync at all for now, until your database runs and properly syncs on its own.

If you do need a refund after that, you can get use the "Report a Problem" option in your iTunes invoice for FMTouch and tell Apple that the developer recommended a refund. They will then refund your purchase.
