[SOLVED] ipad pixel resolution? [Was worth 50 Kudos points!]
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:53:59 PM »
See Answer

I have been building layouts (320px by 375px) using the FMTouch Style Guide written by Any Gaunt. I see that you have been testing FMTouch on the iPad and I need to know the ideal pixel resolution I should build the layouts for the iPad. We will have one at launch and I would like to have my FMP file ready for it.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Julian

For an FMTouch specific response, check out this:

http://fmwebschool.com/reference/FMTouch_Reference#iPad_Guidelines

Essentially:
    *  768 x 916 (vertical)
    * 1024 x 660 (horizontal)

Here's a question I can't find an answer for.  When developing for the iPad and/or the iPhone do you have to make layouts for EACH position of the screen (Vertical & Horizontal)? That leads me to another question... If you do need a layout for each screen orientation how do the devices know which layout to use or which device they are being used on?
When sizing a layout do you start the layout out at horizontal = 0 vertical = 0? I am guessing you would start your layout at the very top and as far left as you can.  I assume this is not a page setup issue... Right?

I have worked with filemaker for years, but never on a mobile device... Your wiiki doesn't really go into detail about the above...  Thanks

You don't have to create layouts for each orientation.  And, as far as I know, you can't determine the orientation yet using FMT.  In getting an app ready for iTunes for the iPad, I had to learn an FMP feature I hadn't used before, even though I have used FMP since before it was named Filemaker.

You use the anchors that are found on the View/Object Info palette of FMP.  It isn't intuitive how the iPad will react to the settings.  I found it more a trial and error using the iPad simulator.  The anchors make the screen "stretchy" and when the iPad changes orientation, the images should stretch or shrink to fit the new size of the screen.

Generally (I repeat "generally" .... I kept being surprised how my changes reacted) you don't want graphics to stretch at all or they will be out of proportion. BUT, you may want them to stay at the distance from the top or the bottom  In this case, don't set any anchors for left and right, but use the top OR the bottom anchor.

For fields, you MAY want them to get wider if the iPad is in horizontal position.  In this case, you may want to try setting the fields with all 4 anchors.  For a graphic background, set all 4 anchors.

Again, it is trial and error until I get a better handle on it.

I hope this helps!
